The Shirakami Natural Science Park

The Shirakami Research Center for Environmental Sciences owns a natural botanical garden “The Shirakami Natural Science Park” in Kawaratai, Nishimeya Village, Aomori Prefecture. It is only 3km to the heritage site, and it has rich flora and fauna quite similar to those in the core zone of the site. The forest of the park is a secondary mixed forest compose of Fagus crenata, Quercus crispula, Magnolia obovata, Cercidiphyllum japonicum, etc. In some area, Cryptomeria japonica and Larix kaempferi are planted. Asian black bears (Ursus thibetanus), Japanese serows (Capricornis crispus), Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) and many other small animals inhabit the forest. Vestiges of human activities in natural forests such as traces of the traditional hunters, “Matagi”s, and remnants of charcoal kilns can also be found in the Park.

The Park is open to the public. We hope that many people will visit our place and appreciate the true value of “Shirakami-Sanchi”.
